I have a Dell laptop for work and I hate it! I am constantly hitting the touchpad with my wrist as I am typing and wind up with jumbled text. VERY unproductive!!! I'm about ready to just take my personal sony in and dump the dell.

So, who loves their laptop, how long have you had it and would recommend it? Or, who knows how to make my processor go faster
Jill, you should be chiming in here. You've owned just about every brand of laptop!
I would have to say... go with a Toshiba. I have owned 2 and they have been perfect! I use Symantec Corporate and have to say it's been a good relationship. Like you don't already know, but don't forget to run ad-aware as those pesky viruses are getting more sneaky by the minute. I found a real bugger other day after I was searching for Halloween party ideas. Random searching will always get you.

If you need a laptop, Circuit City has most of theirs on sale right now AND they have an additional $100 - $150 rebate. This is not only for Friday sales (obviously, because I bought mine last Monday.)
Also, just for the record, I researched and researched prices all over and Circuit City had the best price. About $300 less than Toshiba direct and other retailers.

My old desktop is now being used as a multimedia unit; continuously downloading old Grateful Dead shows from etree.

They are solid, and come with little engineering tweaks that really help. For example, those rounded corners you like because they don't rub you? Well, those same rounded corners prevent a substantial amount of damage when (not if) your laptop hits the floor or gets banged into something. Square corners just shatter.
Although I would not recommend getting Vista right now (even if you could) I DO recommend making sure that what you do get meets Vista's recommended requirements (not minimum, recommended). This is due to many years of experience at watching software bloat up to use up all the available power of whatever the latest OS requirement is.
This means a minimum 1Gig dual core processor and 2 GB ram, + at least 128MB video ram. Or just make sure that it's "Vista Ready". Don't need to get Vista, but trust me on the tendency for software manufacturers to get the new system and specs as their standard and then tell the programmers they can add all the junk they want as long as it works with that system... <sigh>

I have an old Dell desktop that I'd love to use as an external hard drive but I couldn't seem to make it work with my old Toshiba. Maybe I'll have better luck with this one.
I got the most of everything they had available, Ian. 2048 mb RAM, 160 gig hard drive, yadda, yadda.
And no, I have no plans to get Vista within the lifetime of this PC

I read through all of this thread.... quite a bit of reading... but it looks like you did your homework. Good job on maxing out on your options. If you didn't do it now you would be sorry later. If you going to do anything do it right the first time.
I support approximately 600 wireless laptops, among other things, at a hospital and I can honestly say that the Dells have held up much better than HP's, or IBM's that we've had in the past.
Macs - Their owners are as loyal to them as motorcyclists are to Harleys but IMHO I could never justify the extra expense.
Toshibas - I found some of their laptops in closets. They are dirty, dusty, and still running like a VW Bug from the 70's.
I bought a Dell Inspiron 9300 about 18 months ago. 17" screen, 1gb of Ram, 60gb drive, DVD burner, firewire, and 6 USB ports. It sits like a lunch tray on my lap but I love it!! I haven't been at my desktop in my office once since I got it.
