Waiting? No.

Waiting for software is an agonizing thing, especially as you don't know how it will function yet.

(Added) At least, that's my take on it.

We just went with Dell for the new laptop we were thinking about. All told, with good onsite warranty, spent about $1600.

Any thoughts on waiting for Vista?

Depends upon how long you're willing or able to wait I guess Carophilly.

I remember when there were predictions supposedly quoting internal Microsoft communiques stating that Vista --then known as Longhorn-- was going to be released in late 2005. I recall people got all upset about a year ago when others were saying it was going to be delayed til early 2006. giggle.gif

Last I heard, which was this past Spring, MS had issued a press release saying that the Business editions would start being released in November 2006, with the consumer version hitting the streets in January 2007. Goodness only knows if this timetable is anywhere close though. With the expected release date changing so often I gave up tracking it many moons ago.

Welcome Carophilly hi.gif

but isn't this a good time to wait for Windows Vista? Why commit to XP for another 3 or 4 years when a new system is just on the horizon?

Ha! I don't want a brand new Windows OS product. Faaaaar too many bugs to get rid of when they first release those things. I'd rather wait a few years until they get a lot of the glitches fixed. smile.gif

I was wondering about waiting for Vista, too. How is it supposed to be different from XP?

What I'm waiting for is the holiday sales to being. That and back to school are the best times to buy computers.

Regarding the purchase of a new notebook or laptop computer, I too am wanting to be able to work away from my desk. Since I want to carry the computer with me when traveling, the computer's weight and battery life (i.e. the span of time the battery will power the computer during "normal" operation before the battery must be recharged) are significant factors to me. These two factors may also be significant to you copywriter.

For those of you who may not know about Tom's Hardware Guide they offer excellent reviews of notebook/laptop computers and other such things.

Torka - it seems from the information given in the top left corner of your posts that I was born in the area where you now reside. It is a terrific area.

Just a quick note for those are on are in the market for a new laptop now.

I heard on the radio earlier today while running a few errands that CompUSA is supposedly holding some type of Madness sale this evening (Friday) from 6-10pm. Sounded like a Nationwide thing. The radio ad said that all laptops are going to be 20% off.

Might be worth checking out if you already know what you want and CompUSA happens to carry it.

Battery life, yes. Weight, doesn't matter within reason.

Bad news on the Dell front.

Ordered our laptop on oct. 2 and got the standard acknowledgement which showed what we ordered. Then went out of town for a few days and forgot about it. Checked on it today, and they seemed to have completely lost our order! omg.gif

Spent hours on the phone today trying to get them to find it, to no avail. Transfered to 5 different people in 5 different departments, and generally got the run around.

Went on the site to just order the whole darn thing again, but now it was like a couple hundred more for the same thing. ranting.gif

It's possible that because today was a holiday the prices went up a bit, so will check again another day. But tons of wasted time, and stupid discussions with people from India who barely spoke English and asked the same questions over and over again.

Not good. Would simply go buy a different brand now, but feel like a lot of time has already been invested in this one. punish.gif

Ooh, Jill. I hate to hear that. Extremely frustrating, and I was leaning toward a Dell desktop. I have been a bit leery about Dell's service and that just confirms everything else I've heard.

Double check with your bank/credit card company to make sure they haven't already charged you Jill.

You probably remember my personal horror story with Dell from years back, where they couldn't get an order right, but kept charging me again and again for it every time I tried to get them to correct, rather than cancelling one, refunding and/or applying the amount they'd already charged me to the new order.
