Are Yahoo Dir Links Still Worth It?
Posted 12 August 2006 - 04:13 PM
If you're a new site or even one that's been online for a while but hasn't accumulated a lot of links, buying a Yahoo directory link is a good way to get started. Google views them in a positive light since they're human reviewed by a reputable organization.
That said - I'd look around the Y! Directory page you think you'll be added to and see if there are any other links being redirected (see qwerty's comment above). Stands to reason they'd do it again so think long and hard before you fork over the $299.

The link to it from the directory is rds.yahoo.com/S=140647:D1/CS=140647/SS=2781150/SIG=1158dt6ct/*http%3A//thalamus.wustl.edu/course/
Yahoo cloak their OBLs to Google so that they do get spidered and pass PR.
Run the page in question (http://dir.yahoo.com/Health/Education/) through an HTTP viewer (I use Rex Swain's) with googlebot as the user agent and you see that it is a plain link.

I'd forgotten about that. I believe Ian pointed it out about a month ago. So I guess that adds one point to the "worth it" side of the argument, unless and until Google decides to treat this like the spam it is and bans Yahoo

yes, it was either here or SEW where I read about it first.
