The 'link' part - that's the vehicle used to drive the information. For some campaigns it's the media, or influential bloggers, or even a customer list. It's the promotion.
The 'bait' is the carrot. The new mashup, the discount, the free shipping. And you're right, the whole point behind this is to secure links. You just have to decide if the links are for awareness or for SEO. From my camp, it's always about SEO.
Bold is mine. Take the technical sites above out of the mix, do you think the average joe website owner can get a link on these types of sites without paying for them?
A well written, well placed press release can do the same thing.
