Hi,

I have noticed a drop in my ranking since the florida update.

Chatting to a few people, it seems to be that my internal link structure is too heavy. I am in the process of a site re-design but want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

[URL deleted, please see our guidelines.]

I am moving the above articles to lower density subsections

The other factor seems to be too many keywords in my title and description tags, which I am working on re-writing.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Clare

Welcome to HR Forums Clare !

We have a rather long and quite enlightening discussion going on about this subject down in the Search Engine News category. You might want to set aside a few hours and have a go at that thread as there is some really good information nuggets sprinkled thoughout it.

The short version is that nobody can say 100% what is happening exactly. Or at least nobody outside of Google can. My personal belief is that there is a lot more going on than simply page/phrase penalties(?) for KWD or KPD (Keyword and Keyphrase Density), though that may be one factor. Another potential factor along that line of thought is that since Google has introduced some sort of stemming, and this could be worsening this density issue for some sites.

Instead of being one simple algo change, it appears that Google have implemented a completely different criteria of ranking sites for certain competitive (in their view) search terms.

My feeling is that there is now a good deal more emphasis being placed on incoming links from so-called "Expert" sites. I have seen sites which border on having too great a KWD and/or KPD which have been completely unaffected on the competitive terms which are now being filtered. I have also seen other sites which have very similar density numbers, but which have been greatly affected for a single term.

When viewing these two sets of sites, one constant difference between them is that those which have have been unaffected are older sites, and thus tend have more incoming links from these so-called Expert sites.

Again, this is just my personal experience and opinion. Peruse the thread below and you will find all kinds of wisdom. I think it's a pretty good bet that there will be even more wisdom shared over the next few weeks. There is an SES conference in Chicago next week, and you know how it can be when professional SEO's get together to discuss their personal experiences.
