Every now and then I check whole sentences of text in Google to see if it's been copied on any other Website.

I just did it now and Google removed one of the words (I check with the sentence in quotes) and said that Google limits queries to 10 words.

I'm pretty sure this is new.

My question is...why? Why would they want or need to limit it to 10 words suddenly?

Thoughts?

The only one i can think of would be processor load, and delivery time, oh hang on thats two :tooth:

I agree though Jill i regularly check sections of text to see if its been nicked, (that said, any one who nicks my copy would immediately rewrite it into understandable coherent content).

Maybe their new algo is more processor intensive than they thought, or maybe they have more 'filters' they want to bring in and are worried about hardware demands.

Cant think of anything else :)

I concur that limiting the length of search strings would conserve processor usage.

When did you last try it Jill? I ran a similar check about 4 weeks ago, and I got the same limitation. So maybe it is new, but I know it was in place a month or so ago.

Hmm...I just never saw it before. I couldn't say when the last time I put in more than 10 words. Would have thought I had recently, but perhaps not.

I often check potential clients or client's sites. Not so much to see if their stuff was ripped off, but to see if THEY ripped off someone else! (You'd be surprised how often they have.)

Wow, thats a pretty interesting idea! What do you do when you find out that they are violating a copyright? Charge 'em a ransom fee?? (Counting the extra income in my head right now) :)

Most of the time it just helps me find other domains that they actually own, as opposed to them copying from others.

If I ever find that they appear to be copying from others, I ask them about it. Usually it's more like, "Did you know that this other site has your copy? Are you related to them somehow?"

Most of the time, it's their own site, or the other site has copied from them...at least that's what they tell me...

If I'm not mistaken, I think Google has limited search queries to 10 words for quite a while now - at least 12 months or so.

But I could be wrong.... :)

Really? I can't believe I never would have seen it before. I would have thought I had more than 10 words lots of times. But never noticed that coming up. Hmmm...weird!
