I don't put a lot of focus on PR, but I do happen to have the Google toolbar with PR showing. I went to visit a friends website last night and noticed that he had a PR of 3. I just went from a PR3 to a PR4 and I thought "wowsers" - he isn't even interested in marketing his website! I used the toolbar to check backlinks...there were none ;-) I used another tool and there was only 1 backlink.

I used the toolbar to check my backlinks and it lists 3. Another tool also lists 3 at Google, 29 at Alltheweb, and several at other search engines.

Quite humorous ;-)

Hey idrive,

I have heard that G only shows backlinks that have a PR of 3 or higher (just as it does when you use the "link:" API command in a G query.

A more accurate check would be to use the "link:" command in AllTheWeb to get a better idea who is linking to your friend's site. While not 100% (since they use a different set of indexes), ATW doesn't "filter" the backlinks it finds for a URL.

You could also try using the marketleap link pop tool to get a "bird's eye view".

You can also search google for "+www.domainname.+com" Use the quote marks and the plus signs just like that. It's not really a link search, but it will bring up any pages out there with your web address on them. If you haven't been on a linking campaign, going for the keyword anchor text and all, most of the 'naturally occurring' links out there are probably just your web address. I have a pr3, so this is how I checked mine out on google.

It's my opinion (based on research and findings) that the PR calculation has been hosed since the last major update over the summer.

Actually PR has still a lot of importance.
After the title and keyword density it is the second most important factor in google

I would say anchor text and where it comes from is the most important single factor. Its possible to list well for competitive single word phrases without even having the phrase in your title or page copy.

For me, the most important factor is to stop focusing on single factors and take a step back to see the big picture.

Remember, conditional elements come into play so under certain conditions (which one site may meet purely by accident) Title Text works the best. For another with a different set of conditions links may work best. The trick is to do as much as you can to meet the largest number of conditions and then all of your most important things will become more important.

Summary: It's all important.
