In terms of rankings ... I'd say that 1-2 weeks is a bit early to judge but if Google feels that your story is "timely" you will see that jump.

PR are great since they are out there forever. If you actually do have important things to annouce every few months that continiously builds possible search results that will in turn direct people back to your site for the long term.

I think I may get round to doing one very soon though as I have heard many good things about doing them.

Issuing a press release simply for the sake of having a press release only adds to the noise and will bring very little benefit. The more people who issue "junk" releases, the less valuable press releases as a whole become.
IMO, one should issue a release only if one has something to say that's realistically of interest to people outside one's own company and/or one's immediate family. The simple fact that one exists and has a website does not qualify as newsworthy.
