I doubt very many of the news site Webmasters hang in SEO forums. I don't recall ever seeing anyone claim to be associated with such sites. So I don't know how likely you're to find authoritative suggestions.
Keeping that in mind, I believe that if you have a legitimate news source that is well-established and updated on a daily basis, you should be accepted provided it doesn't advocate illegal activities, hate speech, terrorism, etc.

I think I will apply through my Languages School. It is more likely they will accept me like that.

Yes, a lot of those sources carry wire service news stories, but they produce their own orignal stories and editorial comment on their own.
It's sounding to me like you don't really have a news source to promote. I think you're just looking for additional visibility, which while great to have, isn't a realistic objective.

The bad thing is that you likely won't get anyone to include a backlink. The good thing (and it's a really good thing) is that you'll increase your visibility many, many times over. Even better, once you get quoted in a wire piece that is picked up by a major publication, you have a nice news clip.
But the press releases have to be more than "So and So Comments on XYZ". We were going to pursue this, but realized we needed some hard data to release that was proprietary to at least establish ourselves. So we are working with a communications person and developing a bit of a calendar. One will be product-related (e.g., money back guarantee), the next will be a survey of what our customers are finding, then then third might be calling on an agency or group to do XYZ.
We are also starting to barely scratch the surface of lobbying and political activity. That opens up whole new vistas of possibility.
All of this can be a time and money suck so make sure you have something to say because editors get flooded with press releases and commentary.

But, I also have an expat community website, for US and Canadian expats living in South America, which is full of journalists that may want to send their new through Google and Yahoo, this way I think I can get my application accepted and I will be able to send my client's press releases as well.
What do you think?
