Yesterday I noticed a spike in my daily unique visitor count... so I went through my logs to dig deeper into it to see what's causing this sudden popularity. At first I thought... hmmm I might have *finally* ranked in the top 10 for a popular keyword? But no... It turns out my site was mentioned AND linked to in an article within a Pittsburgh online newspaper... Post-Gazette.com. I was (and still am) completely over the moon about being cited in such an article, which talked about the very subject my website deals with.

Yippieee!

Another great reminder that traffic doesn't just come from search engines! A well-done site can attract attention in other ways. Congrats!

I featured a humorous page on a tiny rural community in a mid-western county website I manage. The "town" had 2 residents and 2 buildings (1 being an outhouse -and you had better count it, and the other, a small old time country store that made "moonburgers" for lunch). The best seating was the picnic table outside by the kerosene pump. it got picked up by a national TV network about a year ago and featured in a little Sunday morning snippet. My visitors went from 3,000 - 5,000 a week to well over 100,000 for several weeks after, and darn, if it isn't yet one of the top pages viewed.

As hard as I worked to make the main site a viable source of economic development information, tourism and other valuable content, this little humorous article performs the best.

Great optimization lesson learned. Think out of the box.
