I've heard that if you build links too fast, google may penalize your site. Does anyone have any thoughts on what pace you should go at?

I'm thinking of submitting my site to 50 directories in 2 days, but would that hurt me?

No, that won't hurt you. Probably won't help, but it won't hurt either.

But what is the rate at which link building won't help as much? Or is it relative to the site's history?

Build incoming links as soon as you can.
Think twice before giving a link to somebody.

Just if he is worth linking to your site or not.
I mean the content of the site should be taken into consideration.

Who knows?? and No idea.

just build the links. They will have some effect when they do, if they do and if they don't then they won't.

sorry if it ain't the right answer, but there are no formulas and no absolutes in this game, you pays your money and you takes your choice biggrin.gif

There's no such thing. If you have a great site that people love so they link to it, certainly the engines are not going to mind that!

Dontcha think?

I posed my question after reading Aaron Wall's article:
www.seobook.com/archives/001583.shtml

particularly noting this part:
QUOTE
The client ranks #1 for their brand name and related terms in all major engines. They probably would rank a bit better in Google if I got those links over time and showed consistant growth, but considering how cheap I sold those services for I am still certain they have an exceptionally strong ROI, and I am certain their ranking will rise over time if we put more effort and resources into SEO.

But I understand that different SEOs have different opinions on things. I had just assumed that consistant growth was better than a spurt of links and wanted to get some feedback.

Well see none of us here just go out and collect a bunch of spammy links or anything, we only garner natural links, so it's never a problem.

Think like a search engine. They're not interested in who can subvert their link popularity algorithm the best. They're interested in the site that is truly the most popular.

So if whatever links you get are really just fake ones, of course they're not going to count as much as real ones, assuming the engines can tell the difference.

But if your site really is the next best thing since sliced bread and a million people link to it because of that, you can bet it's not going to be a problem with the search engines, regardless of how fast all those links come in.

I have a website for which I am getting about 200 links from a single domain. The linking site is relevant but the number of links to my site is huge. Is there anything wrong?
Also, past week I noticed that the number of backlinks to my site have dropped to half in Google.

The number of pages indexed were 2140 a week ago and now it is just 150. Any answers?

The PR for some internal pages has also dropped. Is it because of the routine revisions by Google or am I being penalized for the number of links I have got from a single domain?

1. Google's link: command is broken. Don't use it. There is no reliable, quick way to check links in Google. If you are concerned about a specific link, check Google's cache for the linking page; if your link shows up in the cache, then Google knows about it. There's no way to tell whether they "count" it in your favor or not, but at least they know about it.
2. Are you talking about pages indexed from your site? If the actual number of indexed pages from your site has been dropping, this might be something to take a closer look at.
3. Toolbar PR is for all practical purposes meaningless. Don't pay attention to it. Refer to this pinned thread for more info.

They don't penalize for that, but they certainly may have stopped counting the repeat links, since just one instance of them should be enough.

Thanks Torka and Jill.

What should be done to avoid any further deprciation in number of pages indexed? Today the count is down to just 113.Most of the pages in the website are dynamically generated. I have checked the pages, they all exist.

Most of my online business (more than 50%) comes from Google.

Dont you think if the number of indexed pages keeps coming down, my website's presence/visibility on Google will decrease?

It depends why they're losing your pages. There could be technical reasons, or the content may be stuff that they already have indexed elsewhere.

You need to figure out and fix what's wrong if the pages that they're losing are indeed actual, original, informative pages of your site.

How quick will links show up? I submitted to a number of directories and only two have me linked. I would like to know when to start re-submitting or contacting the owners. These are free link exchanges for now.
