I've been SEOing [a site] it used to rank pretty well for some good phrases:

linux web hosting - 5
windows web hosting - 20
web hosting company - 40

and other ranked not so well:

web hosting - ~200
hosting - ~200

and some VERY well

winpanel - 2
web hosting affiliate - 5
cpanel web hosting - 5

Now, it seems like we don't rank at ALL with any phrase that has "web hosting" in it. I think we're punished due to over optimizing... Has anyone else experienced this? If I can get some kind of confirmation that other over optimized sites are experiencing the same it would be helpful.

I thought [company deleted] was pretty over optimized for the phrase "search engine optimization" yet they are still #1...

Please let me know your thoughts, thanks. I'm planning on toning down the seo on this site...

If you don't mind working your way through 30 or 40 pages of posts, we've been discussing Google's update/dance/change/paradigm shift/craziness here.
