Stars Next To Your Site In The Listings
Posted 01 February 2006 - 01:00 PM
Of course, it doesnt make much of a difference if nobody still clicks on your link.
Well, when I was searching for a phrase, I came across a trick another site used to make their site stand out from all of the others on the list.
In their HTML, they put a ★ at the start of their title tag, making the browser and search engines display a star next to their entry.
The intended/unintended result was in their entry was their site stood out in a good way from all of the rest.
Can anybody tell me if they would recommend this "trick", or abstain from it?

as far as search engines go.. i never really see this used and i always thought it was because the search engines didn't want sites abusing the results and filling them up with this sort of stuff.
interestingly enough.. see the following link
result #7 is the same listing, but without the star. it looks like Google and Yahoo ignore the code

BUT...sometimes those characters aren't rendered correctly by all browsers and it can make weird characters appear in your Title. That can probably hurt more than help.
I would say that it's something worthwhile for you to test and see if your clickthrough rate improves (although I guess you really can't tell that for sure). But see if your overall traffic for whatever keyword phrases that page shows up for, starts to move up (or down).

Exactly, and that's the problem with doing it.

Personally it's a good idea to have it to stand out of the crowd but it does not seem consistently displayed as a star character all throughout different browsers, which is why I won't recommend it.

Would never use it, as this will give a bad impression on my valued visitors!

It's doubtful that the character or lack of it had anything to do with your rankings shift.
