I get happy when a cute girl gives me a double take even if I dont talk to her or otherwise "convert" the moment. Whereas I would just get beat over the head with a dead fish or something much more dangerous. Like a 2 by 4. Which would be an entirely appropriate response if idea of "conversion" even flickered through my mind I might add.

How on earth can a computer algorithm, Google or otherwise, spot the difference between a link that has been paid for and one that is 'natural'

They can't really but that doesn't stop them from making the 'tisk tisk' noise when they talk about buying links. That noise coupled with the Google reps blog posts has been enough to slow that whole part of the linking industry down a bit.

It's a shame people mistakenly think the only way to be successful online is to RANK WELL.

Ranking well is certainly important and helps, but to base your entire business model on where you rank is very very risky IMO. Wouldn't it make more sense to find out where your demographic frequents and then buy exposure there?

Link building is a long and tedious process. Buying links is quick and easy and people - for the most part - want fast and easy over smart and long term. This is not a slam by any means, just a generalization of what our society has become.

Is buying links a bad thing? Not in my opinion. But I wouldn't use the links I buy to help influence my rank either. Remember, it's best to use a multitude of linking strategies with your online business. Mix it up!!
