Tree,

The plot thickens...

Yes, the Adwords boxes are definitely bigger - at least for the moment.

Notice all the empty space in the box. I wonder if Google is going to relax their very restricted character length limit in the ads. I know this has been a source of a lot of complaints by advertisers.

Now what does this has to do with the strange organic results? Who knows - unless it's a general trend toward emphasizing Adwords.

Christine

Relax and enjoy the weekend, this isn't an algo tweak or a new filter or two , it's just another good ol' Google SNAFU.

I know you were speaking to Vijay however, I don't see links to the hockey site with 'web design' or any design in them.

I only saw sports related backlinks with sports related links.

It seems that most sites that have all those text backlinks are suffering greatly at this particular moment in time.

Wow! Doesn't anyone look at Google's cache after doing a search?? Try clicking on this link: http://216.239.57.10...&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
Google will tell you which of your search terms has been highlighted and which (if any) appear only in links pointing to the page whose cache you are viewing. Or simply search for calgary web design and then click the link labeled 'Cached' for the CalgaryFlames hockey site.

Since Google works with that they have in their index and their cache, what you or I see or do not see is immaterial. In the Best Practices forum, someone made a similar post:
http://www.ihelpyous...7408#post127408 - only it's about New York web design. And NYT shows up at the top. Same principle seems to be in action. The newspaper is called New York Times on the Web. So it has already grabbed the lead for 3 of those 4 keywords. In this case, however, all 4 keywords can be found in the content, too.

Realistically, I can't see Google doing that long term. The main reason Google is so popular is their very relevant organic results. If they mess that up their popularity is going to drop. Of course, if they are trying to run the numbers up for an upcoming IPO they may not care about long term goals.

Ah but Chris, they would still be highly relevant. Just informational in the left, and commercial in the right.

True, they would not do it if they couldn't get the relevancy right. But perhaps that's what they're experimenting with right now.

And Tree...not seeing what you're seeing. Sometimes if someone has a long URL in their AdWords it makes all the boxes on the page bigger. Are you sure that's just not what you're seeing?

Could you post a screen shot?

Also on some searches I am also noticing that below any sponsored listings running right across the page, Google is also showing the most appropriate directory subcategory for the search term and on the line below any recent news items relating to the search term.

Hmmm... I have been getting the directory listings on some searches for some time now. The sponsored bars are disappearing - as the contracts run out.

The news results are new to me. I wonder when Froogle links will start showing up?

Jill,

I would (post a screen shot) if I knew how. Can someone else who can see it post it (I'm a new boy, sorry).

If not, I can e-mail it to you.

Consider this:
- Larger monitors are becoming more and more popular. Read that as more screen space to display results as well as ads.
- Search terms in AdWord titles are highlighted (bold). When this occurs, the amount of pixel space occupied by those keywords increases. They need space to e-x-p-a-n-d.

The situation now is so hilarious that if Google changed the colors in their logo tomorrow, it will be attributed to either this update or their impending IPO. :aloha:

Incidentally the Directory Search which was showing the same results as the Web Search appears to be fixed. However I still see sites that have no Google or ODP listing show in the Directory Search results.

Here's an example on a search for pizza:

They've definitely widened the Adwords boxes here.

Use ctrl+alt+print screen open paint(or your favourite software) paste it and then save it.

Hey ThinkWeb - Be nice about PSP.

It's a great inexpensive graphics program. I use it all the time. :aloha:

The width of the AdWords textbox now depends on the width of your monitor.
If you size down your window to 800x600, the box will shrink to its smallest size. If you increase it to 1024, it will widen slightly. If you go full screen on a 1280 screen, it will become even wider. Surely we know what fluid design is :aloha: - Google seems to have discovered it recently as far as their AdWords are concerned...
