I have 2 sort of related questions.
I have a blog separate from my website which are after the same market. What's the best way to utilize the blog and my website to help my rankings in Google? Right now I just have some links between the two, but I'm wondering if it would be better to have a feed from my blog to my site for new content.
Second, my friend has a blog whose content I would like to feed into my site (with her permission of course) or would I be better just copying her posts over as separate html pages? Is there any problem with dupe content with feed a blog into a site?
Any input would be appreciated. thanks!

Welcome cosiegirl!
Your thinking is backwards. If your purpose for the blog is to help your search engine rankings, then you'll never have a good enough blog that will actually help anything.
Your purpose for having your blog should be to inform, or rant, or write, or state your opinion, or introduce new things and ideas to the market.
If you do that right, eventually, when you start to make a name for yourself in your particular space, your blog may end up also driving traffic to your site.

Thanks Jill. I understand what your saying, so maybe I should re-word my question. What is the best way to get the most out of my blog and website since the are of the same theme? Just stick with linking the two or is it worth feeding my blog posts onto my site for fresh content?

No need to reword it, I understood completely what you were asking.
If they're the same theme, then I have to wonder why you need them both? If you have nothing to say, then why do you need a blog? Blogs are to express opinions, and all that other stuff I wrote above. They're not some sort of "SEO technique" despite what you may have heard elsewhere.
You really need to think about whether you need a blog, and what you can use it for, irregardless of search engines. I really can't stress this enough to anyone reading this.

Okay, I don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but I will anyway. I understand that there are a lot of people who may start a blog simply for SEO purposes to boost their website. And I understand the push of this forum is to create content and sites that visitors would like and not worry about “SEO tricks”. That’s why I’m asking this question here.
I have a blog to express my own thoughts and opinions around my theme. The writing is more personal and sometimes just short tidbits. My website is more informational and covers a broader area of my theme. Some articles written by me, some articles written by other people, and just some basic resource listings. So while both my blog and website are of the same theme, their presentation and scope are a bit different.
Ultimately I want to get both my website and blog out there to the people who would be interested in my “theme”. Therefore, I am interested in how to best link the two up to get the most SEO bang for the buck so that I come up in the search engines.
As far as “what would be most valuable to my users”, I’m not sure. My focus is more on how to get more users as I think I have useful information to provide on both sites.
So, assuming my reasons for having a website and a blog are sound, what is the best way to utilize the fact that they are of a similar theme and ultimately get more traffic to both? Do I just link them to each other, or would feeding my blog posts onto my website serve a purpose or perhaps be more detrimental (duplicate content?).

A simple link in your blog's main navigation to your website, should suffice.
And vice-versa.
