If a person has an e-commerce site that they want to brand and add content to so that it will eventually develop into an authority site., which domain extensions should they try to buy? I'm assuming they should get the .com and .biz. Should they also try to get most of the others (eg. .net, .info, .us, .org). Which ones would be best to get for both branding purposes and for authority "status"?

It really doesn't matter as long as they brand whichever one they choose.

We always buy the .com, .net and .org - just to keep a local competitor from buying it.
