How helpful, if any, are they.
Do the links from the blog to your site help? (like backlinks from other sites to yours)

I have a blog on blogspot, but for it to be of any use to me I would have to advertise it to other blogs, web sites etc for it to get noticed a lot so that others link to it and keep fresh content out there at least every other day in order to have any real impact on helping your main site.
Thus you just doubled your work load for the same site.
The other way is to put the blog onto your own existing domain and use blogging software to manage it. You still have to put fresh content onto it every few days, and still have to advertise it, but now you only have to advertise your own domain's blog at and noticed for you main domain at the same time. You can now hope that people will go to the blog, get some value, and THEN go to your main domain and purchase whatever product or service you provide since they are alredy there.
So blogging on your own domain I would pick as being the better of the two. Regardless, you still have more advertising work to do to get the blog noticed.
