Our site was added to the Open Directory a few months ago, after many months of waiting. :)

But we still haven't appeared in the Google Directory. :D

I believe the Google Directory pulls their results from Dmoz (someone please tell me if that's not correct!).

Is there anything we need to do in order to have our site appear in the Google Directory, or will this happen automatically with their next update? And how often do they usually update with new Dmoz information?

Hi sglover,

Congratulations for getting listed in DMOZ. That's an accomplishment indeed.

As for the Google Directory, all you can do is wait. And, for as much as I know, it can take 6 weeks or even more before a new DMOZ listing appears in Google Directory.

If anyone can provide more precise info, please do. I'm curious myself.

There's some interesting info here: http://www.google.com/dirhelp.html

Hi sglover,
I'm afraid you have to be VERY patient. I cannot give you the exact period of time, but in my case, we are talking 4 months from I showed up in dmoz untill I - finally - showed up in the Google dir.

And there was another strange thing about it too : If I clicked my way down to the relevant category in the google dir, the link showed up allright. But if I did a search in the google dir, the link did NOT show up. This weirdness lasted for around 1½ month.

This post reminded me to see if my poor website was in DMOZ, so I just checked. Since I just submitted it again about a month ago, naturally I didn't expect to find a damn thing.

I'm listed! ;) and in the Google Directory, too  This happened within one month. But my first submission was ages ago and apparently totally ignored. Which means I don't know if this took one month or a year :hmm: The text used was the one from a month ago, though.

What I did this time was do a search on my subject area, as specific as possible, then look at my competitors in the listing. A complete lack of any promotional information at all. The descriptions are all very boring. So I made one that was boring and looked just like them, too. :)

Maybe that was it. I wasn't aware there might be a delay between the G directory and DMOZ, and it didn't happen to me, so hopefully it will turn out ok for you soon, too.

Or maybe my editor was bored and had some time on his/her hands....

I have a site that I cant seem to get through the DMOZ gates. I've tried the submission process a few times. It is loaded with unique content, etc. Are there any DMOZ regulators about who can take a look for me and tell me what I may need to change? I'm holding off on the URL until hit the big 10 posts, so just indicate you can help a needy soul.

Welcome, acowl ;)

It's generally considered a bad idea to resubmit to DMOZ unless an editor tells you to. The reason for this is that a number of the editors go through their queue chronologically, oldest to newest. If you resubmit, you're jumping to the back of the line.

The best way I know of to check on your site is to go to the Resource Zone, a forum run by DMOZ editors, and post a question in the Site Submission Status area.

HI Acowl, if you resubmit it can hinder rather than help, as if there is no editor it will 'move up' to the next level that has an editor and its like a set of traffic lights in there with reds and greens all over the place, and multi submissions tend to be ignored, (or so I am told ;) )

Oh and another thing, 95% of submissions to ODP are spam or duplicated content sites, but they still take just as long to be reviewed as you have to be sure they are what you think they are, not nice :lmao:

Hi, this is my first post on this forum, but touches on a topic I have studied quite a bit, often to my own personal frustration.

That topic being DMOZ. :fingerscrossed:

First of all, whoever is selling software that recommends daily spamming....oops....I mean submitting to DMOZ, is.....well.....fibbing.

The only things that daily submissions to DMOZ will net you are a) getting pushed to the back of the line or even B) banned from DMOZ entirely for spamming them.

Incidently, on DMOZ's submission page, written in red letters, says any use of automated submission software is strictly against their terms of service. That also calls the software sales rep.....well...a fibber.

This thread started with a discussion of length of time from DMOZ acceptance, (itself taking anywhere from a couple of weeks to half a year!), to entry into the Google Directory.

I got one site into DMOZ very quickly (less than a month in a non-competitive category). It then took from its April acceptance until last week to appear in the Google Directory. No one said either of them was fast! :yuk:

The only thing with DMOZ is to follow all of their rules and regulations. They live for them, it seems.

By the way, I am not now, nor ever have been associated with DMOZ. I don't play one on TV either.

Hi there,

I did this submision campaign 2 months ago and I still didn't have any luck. I was following advices from internet marketing website I submit each of my website pages every day for about a week. After that I did without www. just the name of the site .com If somebody tells you this think works don't trust them. It is waist of time. Probably didn't make it worst.

At the speed of DMOZ, two months is not a long time for a decision, on including or excluding, your site from their directory.

Many sites aren't added to DMOZ for four to six months.

I hope you have stopped submitting to DMOZ, and let the volunteer editors get to your site. By resubmitting, all you are doing is returning your site to the back of the first come first served line.

That only slows the process. It does NOT speed it up!

Resubmitting is not a good idea at all.

Don't do it.
