Just want to share an experience I had.
I live in a small country where we have local search engines with directories, or should I say directories with search engines. The search engines will rank sites from their own directory best, then they "fill up" with search results from Google.
As a newbee I learned a lesson, I underestimated the number of visitors I could get from this local sites. Also I thought that they would not accept my submission since my site is in english.
Well I was wrong about that, as long as I submit sites with some keywords or write them a nice email in my language, they accept it.
For fun I was also faking my closest neighboring country language and got some links there too. (Surprise, I dont know that language very well)
I learned that the local search engines/directories like local stuff.
And at the same time I will get some quality links from their directories witch often has a good page rank, or as you would say here, they are respected by Google.
Well, if you speak french, english or spanish the language effect will not work.
But still, if you have a site that can in any way be related to your local geographic area (or any local area), dont do the same mistake as I did, dont forget the local directories, even if they are small their links and traffic can be good.

All the best, t.
