I'm not quite sure how you use pinging in SEO work, but I do use Pingomatic.com for a series of blogs which I update - using Google Alerts and the Blogthis! toolbar insert from Blogger.

I recently switched from Pingomatic to Pingoat. But most blogging software will let you set a list of URLs to which it will automatically ping whenever you update the blog. The thing is, at least in my experience, that doesn't always work.

Welcome BlogSolution ! hi.gif

I don't view pinging as being directly connected to SEO in any way. Marketing yes, as it's a way to create a Buzz. But not Optimization.

Same here Bob. I ping and have recently switched to Pingoat. But it doesn't always seem to work quite as advertised.

I use TypePad which has an automatic pinging feature. Every time I post, I copy and paste the following list into my trackback window:

Nicolette, I've got a much shorter list (I think I'm about to steal yours) but I'm wondering if you've had problems with IceRocket. I have that same port for them on my list, and I get an error every time, which is why I started using Pingoat.

What is pinging in terms of blogging? I know what the "real" ping is, but since the blogging subculture is something I have managed to successfully avoid so far, I'm not up on the terminology.

When a blog pings another site, be it a blog directory, or another blog to which a trackback has been posted, it's just sending a message that it's been updated.

Very confusing to those of us used to the networking, command line ping. This thread suddenly makes a lot more sense. Thanks for asking the question I was affraid to ask, Raphael. Thanks for the answer, qwerty.

I think one of the important benefits of pinging is that Google Blog Search will rapidly become aware of your new blog entry - say within 1 hour. If your blog entry as recorded in your RSS news feed contains the full content of your blog post, then there is a good chance that you will rank well for keywords that appear within the post. This can be a source of useful extra traffic, since I find a good slice of visitors are using Blog Search now.

Qwerty,

No problem with IceRocket so far. A few times I rec'd an error message and believed it to be a problem with my blog server. I would just re-ping, so to speak. Or you could just ping IceRocket by itself and see if it goes through. This list I use is so extensive, I'm sure there are duplicate pings, so missing out on one won't add up to much I think.
