I don't want to pay thousands of dollars, is there anyone that will charge by the hour and can help me tweak my website with tips...

Any references, these companies want thousand a month for service, crazy!

Then you must not have that much to gain. I am not saying this is a good rate, just that you need to look at it differently.

Think about these examples - custom pool tables at 16k a piece, parking garage construction for 10 million a job, real estate sales for an average of 2 million ....

How many new sales would it take to make a few thousand dollar SEO investment for them sane?

It's an investment, not an expense, and it all depends on what you have to gain.

There are also various prices people charge for various jobs.

If you do not want to pay someone else to do it, you are already in the right place to learn!

Some people make many thousands a month off of a good job. Its not too much to ask for a portion of that back.

If you want to teach yourself how to do it I recommend

asking questions in forums like this
subscribing to newseletters like jills, searchay, and i search
reading books about the internet, copywriting, and search engine marketing

if you are not sure if a book is good, ask people in these forums. if nobody has ever read it, it must have done a horrible job at marketing if it was any good...which most likely means it isn't

there is nobody stopping you from learning how to do SEO.
