There are at least 50, technorati being the most popular (as far as I know)
You will want to prepare a title and description in advance, as many require you to provide that and some require keywords and keyphrases, it's handy to have them in a text file or email to cut and paste instead of retyping. Have a short one about 30 words and a longer one up to 250 characters. Be prepared to spend about 5 hours on submissions if you want 50 (in my experience, anyway) and check your backlinks using a free backlink tool like marketleap, seomoz.org or webuildpages after a month or so. Run a couple different tool checks because results can vary depending on which search engines they are querying. This will show you which ones have added you, or you may get an email confirming your addition. Some directories require reciprocal links--add at your discretion. To find free submission search "blog directory" or "add a link" "Suggest a site" "Submit URL" + blog. Private message me if you want my list that I submitted to.

I would suggest that what's even more important than getting your blog registered is getting your blog RSS newsfeed very visible in the blogosphere. It's also good to ensure that your RSS newsfeed contains the full text of the blog post since this gives more content for the search engines to work on.
Once you have your RSS newsfeed updated with your latest posting, use a pinging service to alert all the news aggregators. I use Pingoat - http://www.pingoat.com/ - which I find seems to have very good coverage. If you do that you'll probably find that Google Blog search - http://blogsearch.google.com/ - will probably have your blog post indexed within an hour.
I now find that, if I'm interested in a current hot topic, Google Blog Search is more likely to give me a relevant reference than the regular Google search or even the Google News search. Usually there's a blogger somewhere or other who has made some comment, however short that may be. It usually gives me a good jumping-off point to find out more.
