Help. Trying To Move Site. Held Captive!
Posted 06 November 2003 - 11:36 AM
I've been having a bunch of problems with the company who built my web-site. I have found another company who can do what I need done to fix things. The problem is this - The site builder says whey won't provide the whole back-end of the site. I have a crippled disk from them. This disk has our databases and image files, but the shopping cart is missing. They say they won't provide the cart because it is licensed software and they can't let it go. In our contract it states we would get "a disk with all web-site files". I see this as including everything needed to run the site. It seems they are doing this to try to force us to stay with them.
Any thoughts??? Please help if you can.

If that's the case, there are certainly shopping cart vendors who could configure your product file for their carts and get you up and running fairly quickly.
While you're at it, you might want to check your domain registration. If you don't have a login for that, you might need to jump through a few hurdles to get your domain pointed to the new server location after making the move.

Make sure you do own your domain though, or at the very least have an invoice showing that you purchased the domain or it could be an age before you can get it back under your control.

get them to sent you the data in a format other than the database.
xls, xml ( recommended ) ,access , other format ....
then get you new guys to import it.
then run with it and try to forget them.
I have a customer that thinks she owns her domain I tried to explain to her that the registration info says otherwise.
I did not fight her but she has been warned.
I hope she doesn't have any problem with the guy. I took over the site from him.
can you see trouble brewing
