Hi everyone,

Would like to know how Yahoo supports PPC.

If I want my ads to appear on Yahoo's web listings (not directory) how do I go about it ? If I advertise in Overture, does that mean that I my ads will automatically appear on Yahoo as well? Also, for my ads to appear in the Directory Listings on Yahoo, what do I have to do ? Do the same ads appear for both Directory as well as Web search results of Yahoo? Also, what is the difference between Yahoo Sponsor Listings and the Ads which appear on the right hand side of Yahoo Directory Listings ? Are they the same ?

Please help !!!!

Thanks in advance :)
Matahari

Hi Matahari-

Let me see if I can help you with this one...

If I want my ads to appear on Yahoo's web listings (not directory) how do I go about it ?

You have a couple options. Yahoo uses Google SERPS, so you will need to work on your Google ranking. However, this advice may be shorty lived, since Yahoo will be moving back to using Inktomi results sometime soon. Your other option is to advertise using Overture...

If I advertise in Overture, does that mean that I my ads will automatically appear on Yahoo as well?

If you are in the so called "premium listings" you will. That is Overtures fancy and confusing way of describing the top three. Historically, bidding into the top three meant your results will appear on yahoo! Now it appears that they are showing the top 2 above the regular results, and Overture spots 3-5 below.

Also, for my ads to appear in the Directory Listings on Yahoo, what do I have to do ?

Submit to the Yahoo directory. You will see an "add URL" link on most of the directory pages. Find the one that makes the most sense for your site, and click on it. If you have a non commercial site, you may be able to get in for free, although it can take weeks. If you are a commericial site, be prepared to pony up $299 per year.

Do the same ads appear for both Directory as well as Web search results of Yahoo?

Hmmm... never really thought about this, but a quick check would seem to indicate yes!

Also, what is the difference between Yahoo Sponsor Listings and the Ads which appear on the right hand side of Yahoo Directory Listings ? Are they the same ?

I am not real familiar with the ads on the side. But no they are not the same. I assume they are sold on a CPM or other basis. Anyone have any experience with them?

Great advice, Scott.

Matahari, SPONSOR RESULTS along the right column of Yahoo's directory pages come from Overture. I believe they're served based on Overture's Content Match, which should work fairly well in that scenario.

Clicks from Overture ads on directory pages will account for only a fraction of your Overture ad spend.

They have a new upgrade going on right now that affects only Yahoo store owners (I wasn't sure if you have a Yahoo store or not). You aren't "made" to upgrade, but if you don't by Feb 1 2004, they will drop your listing and you will have to advertise w/them. They have a whole write up of it in the YTimes for all Yahoo shop owners.
The prices per click range from .19 to $1.25. The categories are very very broad.

Hope this wasn't too :lmao:

That's definitely another way to advertise on Yahoo using their product search engine. It will be interesting to see what success Yahoo has with that model.

Thanks so much everyone, though someone pointed out to me some time ago that the Ads appearing on the right hand column of Yahoo Directory Listings actually come from Google Adwords!

Thanks anyways .. Im gonna try running my ads on Overture now... With time, I will have all the answers :yuk:

Matahari, the ads on the right column are definitely not coming from Adwords. You can confirm this by checking the tracking URLs of the links within those ads. Yahoo simply formatted them with a very similar color scheme.

You need to look at this it appear that depending on the keyword Yahoo are featuring 4 premium spots at the top of the page or 2.
From looking at it it appears there's a relationship between search volumes and the number of premium listings.
Try a search for "car hire" and then one for "car hire france".

Means you don't always have to bid for top 2 position if you want good positioning

Good point, lolmarlor. A bit more consistency out of Yahoo would be nice.

Yes with a good job done looking at the possible qualifying words you can do much better. Google et al however push that all the time, you can use 10 better qualified keywords and spend less for them, also get less hits, but the close ratio is much higher and makes up for that.

If you do this consistently you will not lose the acquisition numbers just get them cheaper.
