I have been building link exchanges for a client for the past two months. At least half of the links are reciprocating at this time, but none of these are reflected on Google using ANY link popularity checks. I have read through the recent thread on link popularity checking and understand that Google does not show all actual inbound links. I have tried the recommended free ways of checking link popularity as well as my own web ceo software. The only links which are displayed and counted by Google are the links within the client's own site. I've had an outbound link to this client's web site from my home page for two months and even that is not included in any counts on Google. A few of the incoming links are displayed when I check Yahoo but even on Yahoo, this is also far from the real number. My client is not happy about this and at this point I am at a loss. I find myself explaining frequently why 1) his rankings keep going WAY up and down, and 2) why he can't see any inbound links displayed on Google . . . yet
There was automated links exchange software installed on his site as well as mine which I removed about three weeks ago as well as all scripts from the link pages which came from the automated links software. Since many of my own inbound links were installed by the automated software and are displayed for my web site, I am not certain that this same software would negate all of his inbound links with Google.
This is not a new web site, only recently optimized. My own web site, which had been around for a few years, disappeared into a black hole for about 7 months after I optimized for the first time 15 months ago. Since it was visible when I searched on my company name, it did not appear to be "blacklisted." At the time I came across information (I don't remember the source, sorry) that newly optimized web sites can also be subject to Google's Aging Factor or Sandbox. Is it possible that my client's web site is also heading in that direction? In light of recent discussions about changes with Google affecting some rankings, I am doubly unsure of what is going on.
