[Moderator Note: This thread is an amalgamation of the various posts we've had over the past few months asking about checking backlinks. Please don't post any new threads on this subject, as your answers should be in here somewhere.]

I checked the backlinks on one of my sites, and though I managed to have several links on other sites and directories Google for example doesn't find them all. I guess he can't find the links in search engines, but directories and other sites shouldn't be a problem. Does anyone understands this ?

Backlinks only show up in Google if the linking page has a certain level of PageRank.

If I'm not mistake, they only report sites with PR4 and above.

Anyone know of a way to get all of them?

"www.yoursitename.com" will bring up every mention of that as a phrase which will pretty much find them all.

I was looking at Google incoming links to my site today. If I enter link:http://www.name.com Google shows me with 130 links. Not bad. Not great either.

When we build a design we put a designed by line at the bottom of every page. If I search by "Web site designed by name" Google returns 704 pages for this search.

Does anyone know why the difference between the two numbers?

Some of the 130 links have PR of 2 or less, so the larger number is not being filtered by out by PR.

www.team-vip.com/links <live link removed as per guidelines>

I currently have 5 links there, when I checked each sites backlinks it does not show mine for some reason? Is there something wrong? I've had these sites listed there for over 3-4 months now and yet nothing. Will this something be permanent or can be fixed? I hope someone will be able to help, looking forward to any reply. Thanks again!

When google last did a cache of this page you had 4
-Bliz.......
-PCfo........
-Extr........
-Top200.......
(full names deleted per board policy)
This was September 21st.

So Google knows about those 4 links.

Likely the link page on your site is below what google uses to count as a backlink. Work on some SEO for that page, get some incoming links and that should do it.

PS: ruibo - edit out your live link or a mod will. Please read the terms here

Google will only show you a portion of your backlinks at any given time. They will never list all of them. As the algorithm changes, the sites showing up as a backlink will also change. Its the nature of the beast.

No argument with what you said. I would add that a page that per Google algorithm is not very important would not show up in a backlink search. The old rule was no sites below a PR4. This is no longer the case for many reasons not the least of which is a 3+ month old public PR number. I’m not looking for someone to give me exceptions, just stating a general rule.

Pages with very low rank don’t appear in backlink searches.

In the past (I am talking 4+months we have shown PR2 pages hapilly showing up as backlinks. The PR4 thing was a bit of an urban myth.

Is there a way to determine just a ballpark - as 2 how many links I have to get to rank well for a certain keyword/ phrase in Google ... definitly that depends on how competitive the keyword is ... but I was wondering if there is a method of getting some idea rather than just keep getting the links - this is from teh point of view of managing link campaigns ...

thanks

You could try looking up the number of backlinks of competing pages..

It's not the number that is important, although that is a factor.

Other factors to consider are:

The importance of the page that your link is on.

The number of other links on the page your link is on.

The keywords in the clickable part of your link, on each page it's on.

The competitiveness of the phrase you want to rank highly for.

The age of your site and it's popularity.

Plus, I'm sure a few other things that I'm not thinking of at the moment. Any time you try to find "how many do I need" for anything in SEO, you will never get a straight answer. Sorry, but SEO doesn't work that way.

I could easily get a specific phrase ranked number one for only 1 link, but that doesn't mean I could do it for every phrase, for every site.

Another phrase and another site might take me 5,000 links.
