Work on your own sites, rake in money from advertising. Take on clients when they beg you for help and offer top dollar.

Prove it to yourself and to a few clients. Offer your services for no charge to a couple Dot.org sites. The more recognizable the organization, the better. They will readily accept your free optimization in exchange for their reference and promotion.

Begin your Optimization and watch the results (your report card) - once you have a few with very strong Rankings and Results -

A: You know you can consistently be successful.

B: You have your excellent references from which you can now begin to "bill" new accounts (clients) accordingly.

You can put some pretty good organizations behind your work, and their praise will help you expand into paying accounts.

Hyperformance,
That's a great idea! I have offered my services to companies for free for one month as a "hook," but I've done that as much to prove myself as trustworthy, legitimate, and knowledgeable.

There are a lot of scam artists out there masquerading as SEO "experts" so we legitimate folk are up against that in addition to everything else. Offering free services, for whatever time period, establishes that you believe in what you are doing and are willing to prove yourself. I realize the scammers could do the same thing, but they'd get exposed as a fraud pretty quickly.
