Need Help Understanding Referrer String
Posted 02 November 2003 - 11:35 AM
Here is the string:
And here is another:
What is the difference between search.yahoo.com and search.launch.yahoo.com?
does the first referrer string tell me that someone was using a french interface (fr=)?
Is UTF-8 a character set? Of the browser? Of something else?

UTF 8 is the unicode character set.
I don't know what the "fr" in the query string means, but apparently it's not French. If you go to the Preferences section in Yahoo and set it for French, then run a query, what you'll get back will include this string: vl=lang_fr. I thought maybe it's possible that the fr you got indicated that the user was coming from a French IP address, but I got it too (and I'm in the US).
I did a search on search engine optimization with language set to French and the resulting URL was "search.yahoo.com/search?p=search+engine+optimization&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-tab-web-t&n=20&fl=1&vl=lang_fr&x=wrt&all=0" (I removed the http so the whole thing would display). As you can see, the "fr" is in there, and it seems to preface the tab I'm using -- Web Search, as opposed to Images, Directory, Yellow Pages, News, or Products.

My client is targeting musicians so I am glad to hear that Launch.yahoo.com is a music portal ;-)
I went to that site and didn't see any advertising, till I did a search on "key phrase". A competitor came up that I haven't seen advertising this week, so clicked on the ad to check them out...decent enough landing page ;-)
Decided to do a check on "key phrase" using the IE address bar...and that client didn't come up in the PPC section - but get this - everything that came up was geographically close to me! Eery! I need to look into this ;-)
