For those of you who aren't familiar with Wonkette, it's a left-leaning, gossipy, happily rude blog about US politics. Well, some guy from the US Army's Central Command sent them a link request. The guy went to the trouble of getting the name of the person to write to, so that's good. He understands lesson 1. However, the reason he gives is what I'm sure he wrote to all of his prospective link partners: "It features updated news and photos from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, so I thought it might be an interesting resource for you and your readers."

Does he specifically say what it is about the Centcom site that Wonkette's readers in particular would appreciate? Nope. I don't think he has any idea of who Wonkette's readers are, or he wouldn't have bothered asking.

So he didn't get the link, poor guy. What he got was his link request email posted on the blog for all to see and mock. At least Ana Marie removed his name tongue.gif

Let this be a lesson to all link builders. Figure out who a site's audience is before you suggest to the webmaster that their audience will appreciate a link to your site.

You might think twice before requesting a link from any site... there is a long thread at Threadwatch started by a guy who had his domains shut down by GoDaddy for sending out link requests that were reported as spam. He doesn't host there, just registered his domains through them.

They wanted $200 to reinstate his domains! I'll find the link in a minute and post it... but in any case, if you like to send out link requests, you may want to think twice about it... at the very least ensure that the site you are requesting from does link out and entertain requests for link exchanges. Or you might have your site mf_zap.gif

I think that was $200 per domain.

Well, this is timely!

Earlier today a link request slipped through my spam filters, and it was someone actually requesting a "triangular link exchange."

Well, after I laughed my butt off, I sent them the following reply:

Good luck with your old fashioned methods!

Yeah, I think unless the site has a place to request a link or submit your link such as with a directory, better off not to request links at all. I delete all that come my way and in my own link building, either submit to directories, niche directories or just buy the links.

I still request links from sites that don't specifically invite me to, but only if they have a collection of links that my client's site would fit into. In fact, I often find them by seeing who links to the client's competition. Obviously, in those cases, I'm not looking for something like a deep link from within the content of one of their pages. It's just another one of the links on the ol' links page, and I certainly don't pretend that those are as valuable as they used to be.

So far no response. Mike, don't be surprised if they try to purchase your TLM ebook...
