Interesting.

Looking at an article containing a comparison chart, Google Talk does not have a lot of features in comparison.

That's because it's just been released and is in beta.

All of this is really starting to make me think the folks at Yahoo! had it pretty much right in that Wired artlicle from a few months ago.

Paraphrasing, their sentiment was that Google today is where Yahoo! was several years ago before they transitioned from being a search engine to a portal. It sure looks like Google is following the same basic path since they went public. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering how large and diverse Yahoo's income streams are these days.

I hope for Google's sake they studied very closely the demise of Altavista, before embarking on this new path...

I saw this at lunchtime ( our time. Greenwich - where it all starts! shades.gif ) on CNN and again in the evening news on BBC Radio 4.

Makes me think I'd like to try it, but I've been ignoring the countless offers I've had for a gmail account cos, with yahoo & hotmail accounts plus my various isp email accounts..... what do I need another for?

So anybody out there got a spare gmail invitation? (or perhaps you don't need an invite anymore? I'll go look.)

I don't think this is a portal move at all. It's a little along the microsoft lines really (SIS also). An all integrated solution where users can access all of their information and look for further information in the form of a collection of applcations. It is diffent to a portal because a portal points out towards the world, and this points home as well. It feels more like something you'd find in an OS. To me anyway.

I heard in US, they just opened it but you have to give your Mobile(cellular?) number for to get the invitation code/link.

If you don't want to do that just pm me with an email addy, and i'll send you and invite.

That's right, it's intended to deter spammers who could take advantage of this service.

Google just released BLOG SEARCH appl.gif

interesting that neither TALK nor BLOG SEARCH was released as LABS
perhaps the LABs is being dwindle out - it has been almost two months since the last one - and that one was an almost duplicate of a previous one
