Never, ever, ever try to do everything with your home page. You've got a whole site to work with -- USE IT!
I just read this thread it found extremely appropriate regarding a problem I am facing right now. Usually, on "normal" sites, I do exactly what you are explaining here. Each page is optimized every way possible, with one or two specific notions.
So far so good.
Now. I have a new site to deal with and it's giving me a headache. I'm even considering to do a bad bad thing (doorway pages) because I honestly don't see how I can optimize the site so it will have a good placement for each notion it covers.
My problem is that this site is in ASP and that the data is pulled from a database in what... let's say 4 pages maximum. The whole content changes there. The site in itself is huge but there are very little pages to work on, with at least 15 notions i would like to cover. And I don't know where to start. With such pages the only zones I can optimize are the METAS, tags and a couple of links at the bottom. And I can add a little text as an introduction. And that's pretty much all. I'm not allowed to touch the various info pulled from the database.
Do you have any tip, even something extremely simple I might not have thought of (I did a site map too BTW), so that site can have a good ranking? It's in a kind of busy commercial sector so I need more than just meta tags (that are not used anyway) and 3 sentences as an intro.
Since the content is pretty random depending on the requests made to the database... i'm not started that I'm already feeling powerless on that matter.
I only rarely have the possibility to work on the content of the sites, the clients usually do not want us to touch it - somehow I can understand it - and it's really tough. SEO is wonderful when you have all possilibities opened though. I'm having a *lot* fun with my personal site, i can try many things and see how the engines react, and it's been very informative for me. Yet this time I seem stuck for good... Hence my plead for help
(and just because I adore it : )
