I work in the UK personal injury sector (dont all click your back button) and needless to say the serps in this field are pretty competitive.
My own website is an ethically clean but rather basic homemade effort but thru careful content building and structuring I seem to be picking up good levels of traffic.
After a link building slog over the last 3 months Ive acquired say 15 good & relevant links to my site. However the 2 of my high ranking competitors have thousands! You look at the link: results and think where the hell have they got those from. You also think that youre p'ing in the wind.
The answer (I think) is down to a form of link farming. There are two sites that appear in my competitors link results:
[Sorry, removing site URLs as per Guideline #9. - Jill]
Both have 0000's of good PR pages and they add links to each one so the benefit to the linking site is enormous. In the case of 2) they ask for $225 per month to use their linking facility. Not quite sussed out how 1) go about it yet.
These links are making a difference to my competitors serps. Ive not named them here but believe me whan I say they appear in the top page for the top KW every time. They use good relevant anchor text and pretty much are in an unassailable position on Google and Ink.
So Im sitting here thinking - maybe its worth the outlay. Paying for a thousand good links with all the linking text you want seems to pay off.
But surely this is a massive cheat?
And if it is what should you do as a competitor - If you cant beat em - join em?
