Tracking Conversion Rates
Posted 27 October 2003 - 01:46 PM
I like to be able to tweak headlines, opening paragraphs, calls to action, things like that. But one of my clients (I've done 8 projects for him) told me,"Oh, I don't track conversion rates, but I'm very, very happy with the results..." Sure. Right. This man earns $450,000 a year online and he doesn't track how his web site sales are going?????
Is there a reason people don't like you to know this? Are they afraid I will charge more if I know how much money I'm really making for them? Or is it reticence? I've signed a NDA with both of these clients, so I would never share the results with others, I just want to know for my own information. I'm a curious person!
I'm wondering what other people's experiences are in this area. I'm a huge fan of Claude Hopkins, and using the "scientific" approach to marketing, but how do I do this if I don't have specific answers? Interestingly, smaller businesses are much more willing to share this with me. They'll say, "Oh, your ads brought in this much more business than before...", that type of thing. It seems that the bigger clients are much more close-mouthed on this topic.
Also, how do I post my pic next to my posts here? I finally got a digital camera, but darned if I know how it's done...guess I'm severely technologically-challenged

However, I'm like you... I want to know. I usually just ask. If they have the info and are willing to share, I'm as happy as a clam.
If they don't have/won't give me the info... oh well. I am certainly in no position to force my opinion/wants/needs on a paying client.

Go into My Controls and look at the options on the left-hand side of the page. Click on avatar settings. Upload away!

The other thing is to ask them if they'll give you a testimonial. Sometimes people like the attention (and link) they'll get from your site and are happy to give at least some generic percentages.
Of course, often there are a lot of changes going on at the same time... new design, new SEO work, so it's hard to pinpoint the benefit.
Some people don't know... some won't tell!

I would approach the guy and tell him just that, sell him on the benefit of him having this data to work from, talk to him about tracking enquiries and conversion rates, talk to him about YOU being able to earn HIM more money if you have this information.
If he still says no then either he is not interested in having more revenue, or he is already having this information and guards it with his life.

I find my ConversionRuler reports fascinating.

Thanks for the help. So the pic is called an "avatar", NOW I get it. I was looking for a "photo" category...
And I guess I'll be satisfied when clients say, "I'm happy" with the copy, instead of bugging them for numbers...although I like the idea of selling them on tracking and testing. My clients that DO track and test swear by it, and I believe in it as well.
