I currently do my own SEO and everything else for my sites, but am very busy running my current sites and thought about hiring an SEO company to work on some of my new site project ideas. My fear is that if i tell an SEO company about my new projects they may try to go into the market with their own sites and compete with me. Does this sort of stuff happen or do most seo's just stay in their field. What are your points of views on a situation like this? As a note, these site will be for affiliate programs.

Blue, I think with affiliate type stuff it can certainly happen if the SEO gets good results. Afterall, if they can make more money doing it for themselves, then why would they do it for others.

However, there are many SEOs who are not interested in putting up their own sites. I guess you just need to discuss this sort of thing with any SEO you are thinking of hiring, and only hiring someone who you are comfortable with and who you trust.

In the contract put in a non-compete clause so they cannot make a similar site.

Also think about putting in a non-disclosure clause about everything discussed 90 days till after the site goes live so that what you tell them they cannot tell others even if they do not get the contract.

Are these kind of contracts really enforcable?

I'll say, go ahead and grow your business....competition always comes in ...try and do things better than competition and u will survive/flourish..

Yes.

You may have to spend some money to sue them if somebody decides to try to test you on it, but you can certainly win a judgement if they've violated the terms of the agreement. The key is to keep the terms reasonable -- for instance, don't try to impose a non-compete with no expiration date.

Getting a non-disclosure from someone when you're discussing business ideas with them or asking them to provide you with a proposal is actually fairly common in consulting.

Given reasonable terms, non-disclosures and non-competes are definitely enforceable legal agreements.
