Myth:

Our pages don't rank well because we didn't pay the search engines for top placement.

Follow up myth:

My competitors outrank me because they spend more on Adwords.

Related Myths:

My competitors outrank me because:

They have really good metatags
They use invisible text
Google rewards bad sites / spam and penalizes "honest SEO"

Follow up Myths:

My site deserves to be number one because:

I like it better than I like my competitors sites
My mom likes it too
I'm broke and need money
My content is better, even though it contains no keywords
I don't like my competitors and the SE's shouldn't either
I follow Googles TOS
My competitors don't follow Googles TOS
I worked really hard on it

More Myths:

Copywriting is the ONLY element in the SEO equation. (I probably shouldn't highlight that as a myth!!)

Keyword density formulas DO TO work because all keywords are equal, all sites are equal and.. copywriting is the ONLY element in the SEO equation.

You HAVE to put keyphrases in your headline in order for your page to rank high.

You HAVE to bold AND italicize every instance of your keyphrases in order to rank high.

You HAVE to include the keyphrases a certain number of times in order to rank high whether it sounds stupid or not.

Visitors will overlook exceptionally repetitive and ridiculous-sounding copy because they understand it was only done for the engines.

I don't care what that site says about Coke, it WILL TO rot your innards!!

Then my innards should have been rotted out a long time ago. Debra's too. mf_tongue.gif

I think we both need to just bypass the having-to-lift-the-bottle thing and get an IV drip. (Yes, I mean 2-liter bottles...)

They are. But the cocaine in the Coca-Cola is keeping you high and preventing you from feeling the pain. eek.gif

Myths I'm seeing right now:

-- Bolding or italicizing all keyword phrases in the <BODY> text will improve ranking for those phrases.

-- You must always repeat phrases throughout your copy for top placement.

-- Not Using <H1> tags will prevent you from achieving top placement.

-- Doorway Domains are an effective way to improve your main site's ranking for particular phrases.

-- Site's cannot achieve high rankings unless they hire an SEO company.

-- Linking to other sites (even if useful to your visitors) will have an adverse effect on rankings.

-- Submit your site to Google when you add new content.

-- You have to pay to have page 1 organic search listings in Google. (someone told me this yesterday and couldn't be convinced otherwise)

-- More traffic always leads to sales

-- Free For All sites will greatly improve your rankings.

-- Exchanging links with everything and everyone even if it's not related is a good thing.

That's really not a myth. If you're going to achieve high rankings through SEO copywriting, you DO have to repeat the phrases.

The key word in many of these myths though, is 'ALWAYS' and that sort of thing.

So, although I agree with Karon on that myth, by saying "always" it's actually true, because you don't have to 'always' do anything when it comes to SEO.

Actually, you don't!

I optimized an online yellow pages ad for a company last year! It hardly qualified as a website, but with some careful writing and a small linking campaign, I'm happy to say it's doing very well at bringing in more business. smile.gif

If the competition is crummy, a page might rank high without using the search phrase at all. Google results for searches that I do often come up with top results that don't have my search phrase on the page. Just similar collections of words.
