Changing Host Company Affect Rank?
Posted 12 July 2005 - 04:07 PM
I created it (with help) in the Mambo CMS. I have recently decided to do two things.
1. Have thig the rewrittern as a static site maintaining most of the good, professionally created text but improving upon the title tags, etc.
2. Changing hosts. The current one has just been a pain with a lot of down time and a very slow interface in the admin.
What am I risking? Obviously my hard earned links will be OK. Am I doing anything that will damage my rankings>?

If at all possible try to give it a month overlap when you change hosts. Search engines and ISPs cache DNS data, so even after you've changed your nameserver info and it's propagated, there may still be some people/spiders hitting the old server.
There are ways to force them from the old server to the new server, but most don't have the kind of control over the local DNS settings to do that. And even though your current host could do it, if they're already a pain I suspect they wouldn't be very willing to set that up for you.
On the redesign part of the equation, it's usually best to set up a 301 Permanent Redirect from the pages that will be leaving to the new pages. Or if you can't do that for one reason or another, you'll at least want to give users a good 404 Not Found error page, complete with either a site map or some type of navigation. People get frustrated when they get lost.
