hello all, before i clock off for the weekend i have one simple question ...
is it still worth submitting your site to search engines and, if so, how often?
i keep reading conflicting stories, some say its not worth it, others say you should do it every month and yet others say should should do it but just occaisonally!
now obviously, in a lively forum such as this there are going to be many opinions, and i want all of them!

:D

just to let you know my situation ... ive taken over as the 'junior' seo of a popular uk financial site. its already listed in many search engines despite not being properly optimised. so i want to know if its worth my while doing the submission thang, or if i should just concentrate on optimising the pages; and no, we're not on dmoz yet!

have a good weekend

:thankyou:

Unless you're considering paid inclusion, submitting won't make much (if any) difference. The spiders will find your pages by following links. Optimization is far more important.

Paid-inclusion won't make a difference either.

Directories -- yes...submit to them. Search engine...no. Don't need to.

Hi Chris

If you haven't got a Yahoo UK entry then I'd advise that you pay the £200 one off fee to get an entry. Currently helps with Google, although it will probably help with Inktomi in the near future

If the site isn't in a search engine then it's worth submitting - else not really worth the time. Much better off spending the time making quality incoming links (unfortunately it can be time consuming) and optimising the site.

If the site is already listed in the search engines, then resubmitting is not going to do anything for you. It's like shooting a gun with no bullets.

Optimize your pages and then the next time the crawlers come around, they'll pick up the changes. After that happens you'll be able to analyze the effectiveness of your optimization efforts and see if you need to do more or if you got it right the first time.

Good luck!

:manybounce:
thankyou one and all!
i wasnt sure whether it might be best to do a one-off submission to all engines (despite being listed - poorly - in the majority of them) in an attempt to find a 'base' level. but your comments have made me see that the Spiders are now much more intelligent and will crawl my site frequently provided i optimise the pages sufficiently!

thanks again
