We redesigned our site recently and, as a result, the URLs thourghout the site changed. Google seems to have caught up, but several others haven't. Should we utilize paid inclusion to speed up the process on Inktomi and Fast sites?

Will paid inclusion result in the old pages being stripped away?

Thanks

Gary

Welcome to the forum Gary :embarrassed:

It depends on how long ago you made the changes. If the other crawlers were crawling and indexing the site beforehand, they should find the new pages in short order as long as they can reach them from the home page and/or other pages that were already listed.

Myself, I'd wait three months before paying for inclusion.

Good luck!

I like to get Inktomi paid inclusion.

First, they are about to be powering Yahoo and MSN soon (at least to a degree) so making sure you rank well in it will get more and more important.

Second, you can change the url that is being spidered at anytime during the year (as long as you are on the same domain).

You can use this to point Ink at a page you are optimising and test various strategies, with quick feedback. Once you are happy, you switch to the next page, and so on :)

Thanks for the feedback. So on one hand I can wait and let my bad URL's get redirected to the new site until the search engines catch up or go ahead and pay to get at least a few pages replaced now. Out of our 500+ pages, I would probably only submit about 10 to keep cost down.

Is it likely that the second approach will result in the old URL's getting dropped sooner? If so, that is good from an accuracy standpoint, but maybe not so good from a traffic standpoint since a redirected listing is probably better than no listing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again

Gary

Use 301 redirects to map from old URL's to new ones.

I'd be temped to use paid inclusion on pages that have rapidly changing (updating) text. That is one partly what you are paying for with paid inclusion. It is also sometimes worth doing for important pages so they are indexed rapidly.

I'd make sure there are plenty of text links in the site to the important pages.

If somebody has a link to the old URL's ask them to update them and let them know the content of the site has changed.

I'd add to this that you can be quite cheeky with PI URL's - especially with dynamic URL's that have your newest products on them.

i.e. www/domain.com/?search=recent

I've done this for several clients that have database driven sites (mobile phones is a good example) as all the client needs to do is add the new items to the database, and let the PI update the engines.

You can also use Trellian for PI's. We keep current with all of the Major engines...
www.prioritysubmit.com
or www.trellian.com...

the costs are all the same for paid inclusion...but we're the only ones who offer rebates to our reseller partners...

It seems that if you pay for inclusion you are locked out of free listings. If you wait long enough and have a decent site you will get in, otherwise, search engines link Ink would be fairly barren.

IMO, Ink is much less picky about links. They count a lot of links they should not; ones Google filters out. With that in mind, it should be fairly easy to get in to Inktomi. Slurp doesn't seem to be as quick as Googlebot is at getting to the new sites, though.

Using PI shouldn't lock you out of free listings.(unless for the same Engine) If you have the time to wait, that might be an option. However, if you are trying to make any income from your site, time, as they say, is money. Even if you have a decent site, it does take time.

MMT SEO Urban Myth #147 - Submitting pages to PFI will get my free pages dropped.

FALSE: It will not automatically get your pages dropped. However, if you have a nice spammy site as far as Inktomi is concerned, PFI could get you dropped as all pages in PFI are subject to human review. If they think you are spamming, then they could remove all your pages. If you are not, you'll be fine!

MMT SEO Urban Myth #148 - Submitting pages to PFI will stop other pages on my site being ever spidered by the normal spider.

FALSE: I've been doing PFI as long as it has been around and this has never happened to me - BUT, I have noticed a longer cycle of free spidering for PFI sites.
