Coming late to the party, but I'll throw this one into the mix since it's something I've used very effectively on a few sites.

Think of it as being similar to, but the polar opposite of Affiliate Marketing.

I've got a little area set up where other webmasters can apply for a discount code to give to visitors to their site or readers of the newsletter. Basically, they apply via a little form on my site, I input their data into a little back end system, which generates their individual discount code that I then email to them.

They link to our site (either from their site or in their newsletter) with a nice, clean link and provide their readers with their discount code that they type or paste in during the purchasing process. The discount amounts to the same net amount we would receive if we signed them up as an Affiliate instead, except that I don't have to deal with cutting checks every month.

It's worked quite well to both drive traffic and provide some link popularity. Additionally, because of the discount code needing some explanation, our sites get a larger mention from our partners. It's especially effective for newsletter marketing.

Honestly, in some markets, I've found this discount routine to be an even more effective marketing method than getting Affiliates. Our partners get a feel-good warm and fuzzy, we get more paying customers, and I don't have to deal with affiliate checks. Plus we get a little bit of link pop in the deal, even though that's not why I did it. wink.gif

In case you're wondering, yes I track all of that info too. Just like I would with affiliate's. So I know who is sending the most traffic and best quality traffic (read: sales conversions) and can even give those webmasters/writers a higher discount if I want to.

The .edu/.gov question made me remember it just now. Those and pretty much any type of Resource site love this kind of thing. They get to offer Real Value because of the discount, so it makes getting a link placed a lot easier.

you can pay for a good quality backlinks at your local town hall and city and county web sites (chamber of commerce, etc...). These are usually high traffic and high PR...great for back links.

Go to Google Directory and search by keywords that relate to your site, then select the relevant categories. This way you will have a list of sites by PageRank to start developing a link plan of attack.
