Firstly .. Hello to all from Roseanne van Langenberg, a Marketer from Melbourne Australia ... it is great to be in such professional company.

I have posted at a number of other "professional" Forums for advice, and in desperation for the correct answer ... ask the following.

For my self-hosted, Blogger based, Marketing blog .. I have had a hard time trying to alter the code to display an optimized "title tag". [site removed]

All I have managed to accomplish is a rather "spammy" repetition of the Keyword and Description Tag, which unfortunately lists all my Posts with my Blog/Company's name preceding the description ... so if you do a search at Google, all my Posts come up with the boring title of "Marketing Defined: name of Post", instead of the correct optimized version of "Keywords or description: Marketing Defined".

I cannot go in and alter the code for each post manually, after the fact, as Blogger's template code will simply overwrite any manual additions if I were to do a republish of the whole Blog, which is sometimes necessary (besides this could become a rather unwelcome tiresome manual correction)

Any ideas on how to change the source code so I get the description/keyword of the Post showing before the Title of the Blog and also avoid the repetition of the Keyword and Description Tags .. it is no point writing to Blogger, it is a free service, and Customer Service cannot be expected ... I have tried!

Here is the relevant source code as it stands at present .. I must admit that even defining the correct Doc Type has me licked for this Blogger template ... and in view of current MSN requirements for correct coding ... it is of concern I could be getting downranked for not having the correct source code.

PS. I have just received my first Google PR after exactly 4 months of publishing my first Blog (in a highly competitive field and "keyphrase" ) ... and presume this is a consequence of the Aging filter.

CODE
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

<head>

 <title>Marketing Defined</title>

 <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
<meta name="keywords" content="Marketing Defined" />
 <meta name="description" content="Marketing Defined" />
<meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true" />
<meta name="generator" content="Blogger" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Marketing Defined" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/MarketingDefined" />
<link rel="service.post" type="application/atom+xml" title="Marketing Defined" href="http://www.blogger.com/atom/9391165" />
<link rel="EditURI" type="application/rsd+xml" title="RSD" href="http://www.blogger.com/rsd.g?blogID=9391165" />
<style type="text/css">

/*

I would be so grateful if this annoying little issue with getting the DOC type declaration and proper Tags for my Blog resolved once and for all.

Gracious thanks
Roseanne van Langenberg

There's no need to change it. It doesn't matter which order the title and tags are in. In fact, the search engines really don't care much about what's in the keyword and description tags at all.

Welcome, Roseanne! Good to see another Aussie on the board smile.gif

You're right, getting the title tag to contain something useful is important, and just including a heap of junk from your meta description and title tags isn't what you want sad.gif
I can't help you fix the Blogger stuff, unfortunately. I've never been very impressed with it. Too template driven without giving enough control sad.gif
I have a couple of hosting clients who have moved away from blogger to get better control of their blogs - you might need to consider that. It can kill a lot of your SEO investment to change URLs, and unfortunately Blogger doesn't seem to help with redirections (and, really, whats in it for them to help us leave?), but its usually better to bite the bullet and jump when a tool isn't up to scratch sad.gif

HIH!
Lea

Hi Roseanne! bye1.gif

The only place that you have an option on Blogger to change the meta tags is on the template that drives your entire site. At least thats as far as I can tell, if you are using it for hosting your blog as well. Unfortunatley you can't change the meta tags for each individual post.

If you are using Blogger to write the blog and then shipping the hosting up to another site, THERE, might be the "out" you're looking for. Blogger puts each entry in as it's only "html" file, so realistically , you could then download the file to your computer from your ftp location, fix the meta tags and then reupload it to the hosting provider.

However, like Jill said, Google cares not a lick about meta tags ... so that would really seem like a whole bunch of running around for nothing.

What I've found that works for me and my blog (which is currently on Blogger) is:
1) Making sure my title of my posts have the keywords in it
2) Making sure I put Technorati tags at the end of each post
3) Bookmark each post out in del.icio.us with the right tags associated with the post
4) Feedburner syndication
5) Register your blog with blogging communities

If you need any further help on the tagging, PM me and I can help point you in the right direction smile.gif

I am "stunned" ... but in a very positive manner. What a gracious bunch of folks you are ... many thanks for each of your replies , and I will take you up on your kind offer Storyspinner ( I have all your optimiziation tips covered, but do not use Delicious as yet).

There's a lot to be said for your instant, and accurate help ... I certainly have not experienced such generous sharing of expertise before this Forum. appl.gif

Regarding the issue of manually fixing the tags, after Blogger saves the file to my domain ... unfortunately I have tried this, but it doesn't "stick" ... as soon as I do a republish of the whole Blog (after editing the sidebar for example), the Blogger script overwrites my manually inserted title tag. (And I have already changed the Template tags to get the best fit of the "title" containing the keywords of the Post ... just could not work out how to get the "title" of the Post with the keyphrase to appear before the Blog's Title ...)

I was just trying to score maximum SEO points by having my keywords/title appear before the Blog's name ... shall not waste time worrying about it, but .......

.... definitely leaning towards moving to a WordPress script, and have found a good Post covering the issue of the transfer without losing rankings ... it will mean tedious 301 redirects but I can live with that ... or maybe you have a magical solution for a "blanket" redirect (although I am probably hallucinating here)

Many thanks
Roseanne

Jill ... Apologies if I inadvertently put my Blog's URL in the wrong place, thought I was adhering to the [url=http://www.highrankings.com/forum/index.php?act=boardrules]Forum Rules[/url] by leaving out the preceding http. Shall read up on the Rules again ... personally dislike SPAMMERS and their poor manners !

yeah, i figured that what it would do as well, although there's an option somewhere in Blogger to only repost the index .... although if you wanted (again I don't know how worth it .. it really is) ... you could always just house the copies you've fixed and reupload them once you publish it through blogger ... pain in the arse... for something that's a little minor smile.gif

I'm doing some research before I actually move mine out to the domain I have for it. Want to ensure I'm workin' with the best one out there .. and the easiest in means of transferring it over, too smile.gif

Let me know if you come up with any solutions for the headaches!
