Is A 2nd Listing On Yahoo! Worth It?

Hello everyone.

Yahoo! says that a site can be listed in a maximum of two categories within their directory. My client site is already listed in one, and there is another category that is very much suitable to her site.
Does anyone have any insight on whether it's worth paying the fee to have the site added to this second category? Also, would that influence PR ranking and link popularity?

Thank you again,

Lydia

PS: It snowed here this morning! :embarrassed: Can you believe it?

I run a couple of sites that are in two categories in Yahoo, but both of those got in for free -- one's old, the other is non-profit. It does appear to count toward link pop, so I assume it counts toward PR as well.

I don't know if I'd recommend paying for a second listing, though. I guess that would depend on how valuable your client finds the one link, from the perspective of how much traffic it brings, and what the PR is on the page you expect Yahoo's second listing to appear on.

Should I believe it? Where are you?

Hi qwerty,

I'll check into the PR of the category. Thanks for your insight.
I'm in Western Canada - aka the "wet" coast!

I don't think you can submit a site that is already listed in Yahoo. You could apply for a change request, and ask for the other category, but you can't pay to have it added to another category.

I just did a search through Yahoo's help section, and I couldn't find anything about being able to get a second listing for a site. So now I'm wondering how I managed to get it on two different sites.

You'll have to take my word for them being there, since now I'm worried that if I mention them Yahoo will find out and drop one of the listings. :embarrassed:

<added> Oh, I remember --- Regional listings:

If you search for your site and only see a listing in a regional category, it is still possible that the site is linked to additional categories in the Yahoo! Directory.

Hi qwerty and Jill,

As per information found within Yahoo:

For web sites that do not feature adult content or services, the Yahoo! Express service costs US$299 (nonrefundable) for each Directory listing that is submitted. Furthermore, for each listing accepted into the Directory, there is a recurring annual fee of US$299 to maintain the listing in the Directory for the subsequent year.

On How to Suggest a Change to your Yahoo! Listing, I've found the following:

Use this suggestion form to do any of the following:
Change the URL of your listing.
Change the title of your listing.
Edit the description of your listing.
Suggest additional or different categories for your listing.
Change the email address associated with your listing.

...

If you want to suggest an additional category for your site, enter that category below. Once again, you must enter the category name exactly as it appears within Yahoo!. Again, consider a cut and paste of the URL.
Note:

Each listing is limited to a maximum of two categories. If you are requesting more than two categories, your request may be denied.
Commercial sites may not be placed in non-commercial areas
As above, remember that if a listing is relevant only to a specific regional location, it will only be listed under the appropriate "Regional" sub-category. Requests to list a regional site in an additional non-regional category may be ignored.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thank you,

Lydia

Lydia, yes, you are welcome to submit to 2 categories when you originally submit.

But you can't submit again, once you're already in. You absolutely MUST submit a change request form to do this.

I have seen Yahoo add a site to a topical category and a regional category upon submission. In other words, say you sell home made cookies on a national scale but you also have a local store. You could get listed in a national cookie type of category as well as a regional one related to your physical location. These are the kind of scenarios where I have seen Yahoo list a site in two categories. And many times, Yahoo did it on their own without suggestion from the submitter.

However, I believe Jill is correct in that you can't pay to be listed in a 2nd category. You can submit alright, but they'll just keep your money and tell you "Sorry, Charlie! You're already listed. :P"

If you are already listed in a national type of a category, put in a Change Request and ask to also be listed in a regional category, if it is applicable that you be listed there (i.e. you have physical location there, corporate headquarters, etc.).

Yep, you want to use the "change" form and just put in the comments section that it is ALSO appropriate in X... category - DON"T put the category in the "MOve listing to ...." slot - use the bottom

It's hard to squeeze a lot of info in there because the characters are limited to 250 or so, but if you figure out how reduce the category string, you'll also have some room to request 2 additional categories at the same time and have a little room to explain why you feel it's necessary. I have gotten 2 additional categories at once this way, so it does work.

So, how to squeeze the exact category string you want into the form? Let's use the category where This forum is listed as an example:

The "proper" URL Is:
dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Web/Site_Announcement_and_Promotion/Search_Engine_Optimization__SEO_/

in the change form, you would put something like:

Comp&Int/Internet/WWW/SiteA&Promo/SEO

the editors will figure that out:)

Hey Guys and Gals,

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I was about to make a huge boo-boo. Now, do you think it's worth it doing this? I think that prospective customers of my clientele would benefit from having the chance of finding her information on both categories.

Thanks in advance (and wishing a good day to everyone),

Lydia

Good tip, Elisabeth. I always thought it was weird how they limited that comment section to so few characters. Hard to tell them what you need to tell them in such a small space!

:P
