They've got their built in excuse already.
Adwords and other PPC venues are in no way connected to Google's natural SERPs. There's a Wall between the two and they don't even talk to each other.
Now if they were going to be completely honest with that statement, which I've heard in repeated over and over and over again by Google representatives for years now, the page in question would not change one iota. But it would be removed/banned from the natural SERPs.
