I've very recently gotten into the whole world of search engine optimization and internet marketing and I was wondering what good some of the tools out there can do. I don't have a huge cash-flow and I wanted to know if it was worth it to buy a tool like Web Position Gold, or Optilink, or some of the others I've seen. I've seen a couple of online tools, such as the free www.search-engine-ranking-tool.com and some others that are really inexpensive, but I want to know if it's worth the money to buy the "big guns".

What do you guys use?

Welcome Matthias ;)

If you are just checking your own site's rank, then it's unlikely you will need to use anything other than what you are already doing - you can even just go to each engine and type in your searches (I did, for a long time)

The only time you "need" higher powered tools is when you are searching on a *lot* of keywords or domains - and the SE's hate it when you do that anyway.

The main use for these programs is that they put a bunch of tools in one place and provide for some nice reporting functions, but they don't do anything you can't do yourself. I use WPG, but I offer free ranking reports online and can end up doing a lot in a day. This saves me time.

If it's just for your own site, you are better off doing it yourself and saving your money, usually.

Addendum:

The one exception to this would be Wordtracker. You can get some nice info from the Overture term suggestion tool, but Wordtracker really is worth the $5 or so it costs for a day, especially if you only have one site.

Plan out your market on paper, do the best you can with keyword brainstorming, use the Overture tool to get some more ideas, then jump on Wordtracker for a day and have fun! Make sure you use the thesaurus option - it's very helpful.

I think this keyword tracker is a great tool and the cost is hard to beat (free ;)) I use this every few days to see where we stand.

Being in a small, stingy company, I do everything manually...check rankings weekly by hand...makes me look busy and gives the brain a way to ease into the work week.

Some of the best things to use are free. most people either use overture, google, or wordtracker for their keyword suggestion, wordtracker is the only one that charges. you can buy usage for a single day for $6...

as far as rank checking goes, it is better to use server logs to see what you list well in... if you are drawing visitors then you must be listing well somewhere

many SEOs use the google toolbar (with advanced feature) to help aid in link exchange
