I have quite a few sites. Recently a few dropped in PR. So I did some link checking and found that many of the sites that had been linking to me aren't any longer. Many went thru redesigns and ditched their reciprocal link pages, while some just vanished completely.
I've heard and seen some sites uses link management scripts. What is everyone's opinion on this utility? It's frustrating and laborious trying to keep track of reciprocal links manually.

Link management scripts may be useful for maintaining links on your site, but I don't find them particularly useful for tracking who's linking or removed links from your site. This is because I don't find reciprocal linking particularly valuable. If the only reason someone is willing to link to you is because you're willing to link to them, chances are pretty good that their site is not a especially valuable from a traffic and or rank influencing perspective. So policing them does little good.

Hi Spike
It is worth checking that you dont link to bad neighbourhoods, but you may be wasting time checking that all links stay reciprocal.
Dont forget that PR of sites on the web will, on average, fall as new pages are added to the index.
This is a more likely reason.

Well, from my experience, I would disagree. I have found that a significant part of my traffic comes from reciprocal links. And more traffic can translate into more sales. There are high quality and low quality reciprocal links. You never know what they are until some time has passed. Stat logs are a great help at determining the better ones.
