Just Can't Make It Over The Hill
Posted 09 October 2003 - 10:56 AM
Its not a bad thing, I'm just not on top. The site in front of me doesn't seem to be optimized like all I have read, but then I'm no professional and really do not know that much. I have been trying to figure out the description in the results, mine is my text title and slogan I have at the top of my page, not really what I would want it to be. I can't seem to see where the result at number one is getting the description from. Anyway sorry for the long wind...the keyword is trompe l'oeil.

Also helps to target just one keyword phrase per page. In stead of 3 now. Spread your keyword phrases over 3 pages,.. (Set up 2 new pages for the other 2).

You beat out Amazon!
Like Peter said, try to keep increasing your Link Popularity (getting quality and relevant sites to link to you). Good luck in your quest to get on top of the hill!

The enigma is that #1 is a framed site with the mentions of trompe l'oeil coming in the frameset-child subpage. Yet the link in the SERP pulls up correctly the full framed webpage. In the past I found Google would occasionally show only the frameset-child subpage but without the frame.
#2 is not framed and has a very long web page and would seem to have more trompe l'oeil's than #1. I would have guessed the order would have been reversed. I'm stumped.

Actually, Barry, they are rated. The first has a 5/10 rating while the second has a 4/10 rating. You probably searched and clicked the listings and seen a grayed out PR bar ... I did too. Stupid Google PR bar is constantly inconsistent. However, copy each's URL, close browser and fire it back up again, visiting each page and you will see the ratings I have described above. Just thought I'd clarify that.
That's a real enigma if my search for trompe l'oeil gave it in the same order. Both #1 and #2 are not rated by Google.

1. Ok, I can understand you wanting to be #1, but #2 out of 95,700 isn't too bad at all!
2. My first thought was link pop, but #1 has 16 links rated by G, many of which are internal links; #2 has 29 links, most of which are external. I can't comment on the relative quality of those links but, at first glance, it doesn't seem that link pop is the problem.
3. However, #1 does have more pages. Although the text on those pages isn't anything special, I did notice that every page title begins with the keyphrase 'trompe l'oeil' whereas #2 has that keyphrase later in the title tag, after the name of the painting.
Question to my fellow forumers: Could that be why they are #1??

After a brief view of your site, my first impression was the PAGERANK. No 1 site has a PAGERANK of 6/10 and your site had a PageRank of 4/10.
Next thing 1st site seem to have couple of phrases in the H1 and the H3 tag.
Third in the no of URLs in a page. Your site has 171 URLs, search engines find it difficult to index pages with more than 100 URLS,
Last thing is the no or repetation of the word, trompe oeil -repeat 47 - 3.01%. The overall repetation of word in the page is around 3.01%. Usually recommendation is around 1.5 % to 2.5 %.
This is purely my own suggestion,

And then about the word repetition right now I would be scared to take anything away, since I'm no pro...I need to learn more, right now I would feel safer adding then substacting (it would be just my luck to delete the one word in the one place that made all the differenc)The main thing I have been wondering about is could my site be getting bumped down from number one because I am getting spit out in a filter or something? I jump ahead for a day a month on average then everything just reverts back to the way it is. Before the big change at google I was number one for many months, then banished...I guess that is better then vanished. It isn't like I am loosing money or making any for that matter from my site...I just need a compulsive hobby. Thanks for anymore thoughts.
