Hi everyone!

Just wondering if anyone knows if there's a UK version of WordTracker or the Overture KW selection tool...?

How do others approach UK KW research?

Cheers,

Dave

One thing to bear in mind with Overture figures I only found out today. Overture are now mapping the searches from similar keywords back to a single keyword.

For example if a search is done for the term "car rental" someone at Overture has now writen a piece of login that says car rental = car hire.
So Overture now says searches for car hire in Dec 2004 = 318,455 when really it should say something like:
Car hire = 200,000
car rental = 118,455

This has real impact if you are trying to identify search volumes for key words that can be bought more cheaply.

According to Overture this mapping is a manual editorial process so its pretty random at the moment.

Its a pretty nasty trick to stop you buying traffic more cheaply, historically you could always by traffic for "car rental" cheaper than "car hire" now its all at one price, the "car hire" price

nice.......

So do you mean they do this for keyword buys, or just in the keyword suggestion tool? That's a bit tight isn't it?

Does it completely take away the ability to bid on lower price (and volume) search terms?

Does Overture give any indication that this is happening during your keyword research or buying? I.e. does it actually tell you that you're not bidding for the keyword you thought you were? Or did the price of "car rental" just suddenly jump up with no explanation?

What would happen if you were bidding on both keywords with different ads without knowing that they were now one and the same?

Its doing this for both keyword buys and keyword suggestions.
The only indication you have during research that this is happening is that the keyword you type in the suggestion tool isn't returned in the results but one very similar is.
Not sure what happens is you are already bidding on a keyword that is merged as it was a new account I was setting up.
I only spotted this because I had a lot of keyword rejected by the editorial team as duplicates when they weren't. I then rank our Overture rep who explained this.

Not sure if they notified people with account when they started making these changes as I'd been out of PPC advertising for about 6 months

I didn't realise the Overture one was inaccurate in this way - does anyone know of any other key word tools for UK users that are accurate at all?

Just had a try at the Overture tool for UK search phrases, and even if you key in plurals, it still only gives the singular versions in the results?? It makes it more difficult when calculating search phrases - doesn't it?

It's worse than that, actually, if you're trying to use their search term data for SEO. Singulars and plurals are combined, yes, but they also combine multiple variations of a search phrase (different word orders) into one.

Hi Dan,

Many thanks for the info.

Is there any **accurate** sources for keywords and/or keyphrases that UK users use?

Hi,

I'm struggling with the same issue here. When using wordtracker I fear a large percentage of results are specific to the american market which isn't always what I want to target.

As it seems there are no real UK alternatives to wordtracker does anyone know of a way to use wordtracker more 'locally'?

Thanks,

Konrad

You may want to try out KeywordDiscovery.com Konrad. If nothing else to get a comparison.
