What’s Your Take On This Ongoing WHT (WebHostingTalk) Discussion?

What does Google.co.uk look for when indexing UK specific search results?

All country spefic searches include:
1. Hosted in said country.
2. Country specific domain, e.g. .co.uk for UK, and .com.au for australia etc.

That is pretty much all that is required.

To my mind, othellotech is correct -

*AFAIUI google uses the location of the IP address to determine location, so for google.co.uk/pages in the uk , you would need to be hosted on a server *in* the uk, not run by a UK company*

I remember problems arose for some sites hosted on servers in the UK whose IPs were not being "recognised" as UK ones, turned out the company was using some Dutch ones as well as UK ones.

Tom if you are looking fora decent hosting service then try bpweb.net, they are UK based, a small business but great service, I used them for a while, and some of my customers use them as well, they have a re-seller hosting plan that will allow you to do all the good stuff yourself, or you can set up an unbranded control panel set to passswords for your customers.

You can have as many pop3 as you like, proper subdomains, and all this is only £30 +VAT making it 35.25 per month. I have never had a problem with them and recommend them all the time.

Hope this helps.

PS we have .com.info etc uk based sites, and they show up in google uk search no problem.

My personal site is a .com but hosted in Canada with US nameservers.
It counts as Canadian on Google.ca

Googleguy also went on record in March 2003 as saying that Google currently uses IP instead of TLD for geolocation, but is always trying to improve algorithyms.

So currently, the actual IP of the site is the key - not the nameservers or the domain tld extension.

Does anyone have information on how a country specific tld and IP that is 301'd to a different (out of country) IP would work? That might be an option.

Ian

Tom the £35 a month is the reseller package it will give you unlimted domains on that, so you can hapilly host 30 domains with bags of bandwidth and transfer available, you can set up control panels for your customers that are unbranded as well .. if u r looking for cheap then go to 123reg.co.uk you can register .uk domains with for £6.09 inc vat for 2 years and hosting will cost about £1.20 per month per domain.
