I remember Google used to list the skills it required of software and hardware designers somewhere on it's site, but it's now gone or I can't find it.

Basically I would like to know what technologies or skills are required. I'll start off with;

1. Neural Networks
2. Algorithms
3. Database design and SQL

TIA

If you were planning on following G's model, then I would certainly look for people with hardcore network design & administration skills, since you will need to manage multiple datacenters & deal with lots of load balancing & scalability issues.

Not intending to follow Google exactly.

We are writing a search engine at work that receives a search term from the web then scans our keyword database for matches. The keywords describe images. We are trying to make it work fast so was curious as to what technologies could help.

Useful skillsets would vary greatly depending upon the platform the application is run on, the language the application is coded in, the type of db the image keywords are stored in, and so on. Size of the keyword database (both now and it's potential size, say, 5 years from now) will also determine what you need to focus on. And, of course, the number of concurrent searches will definitely play a factor in what sort of skillsets will be needed.

Is buying an off-the-shelf app out of the question? Seems like it would be lots more cost-effective.

I guess it would depend on the scope of the project. If this is intended for an intranet / extranet scenario (which is what this sounds like), then a boxed product might do the trick...
