Will Our Rankings Decline After Changing Servers?
Posted 13 January 2005 - 10:40 AM
As a part of the trouble-shooting, our hosting company want to move our website to a new server. They say the new server runs newer software, and should be more stable. The problem is that we'll need to change the IP address for our site.
We have good rankings with most of our important keywords, and don't want to risk losing position with Google, etc.
Our URL will stay the same after the move, but our IP address will change.
Will the move and new IP address affect our rankings with the major search engines? If so, does anyone have suggestions on things we or our host should do to minimize the damage???
Thanks for any advice!

In the olden days, this was more critical, but nowadays, if it's not possible or it's just impractical in the host's opinion, it won't make a huge difference. At worst, there will be a day or two hiccup in your crawling but it shouldn't affect your rankings.

It won't affect your positioning and definitely it's not a bad idea to tell your host not to delete your site off the old server for a few days
